An Alternate Outfits Folder Method

What is the Outfits folder?

In Second Life, the Outfits folder (located in your Inventory) stores links to items like clothing, shape, skin, and attachments for quick avatar changes. You can create, rename, and organize outfits by dragging items into new, custom-named folders. Recent viewer updates often prevent nested subfolders directly within the main "Outfits" folder, requiring users to manage nested, organized folder structures within their general inventory instead.

What is this article about?

The Outfits folder can quickly become quite large with many outfits, each of which include links to the same items like body, head, shape, skin, and some attachments always worn. This article describes an alternate way to organize outfits so they are easy to find, manage, and wear.

What is this alternate method of organizing outfit folders?

To organize outfit folders outside the system Outfits folder, create and populate folders in your general inventory:

1. Create a top-level folder in your Inventory. Let's call it "** Outfits **"

2. Create a subfolder in the "** Outfits **" folder. Let's call it "Base".

3. Create links in the "Base" folder for all items your outfits will share. For example, my Base folder contains links to the body, shape, eyes, head, skin, eyebrows, body morphs, physics, kisser, spanker, AO, and BOMs I use in all my outfits.

3b. One way to easily populate the Base folder with your shared outfit items is to copy all the items from an existing system Outfits folder, paste them into the Base folder, and delete the outfit specific items like clothing and attachments not shared across all outfits.

4. Create a subfolder in the "** Outfits **" folder with the name of some outfit. Let's say it is named "Red Bikini".

5. Create links in the "Red Bikini" folder for all the items in that outfit that are not already in the Base folder. For example, create links for the bikini top, the bikini bottom, the hair you wish to wear with this outfit, shoes if worn, sunglasses, vagina and vagina HUD if worn with the bikini, jewelry, fingernails, tattoos, etc

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each outfit you wish to manage in your "** Outfits **" folder

7. Wearing an outfit in the "** Outfits **" folder is a two step process:

   1. Right click the "Base" folder and select "Replace Current Outfit"

   2. Right click the outfit folder you wish to wear and select "Add To Current Outfit"

8. To change outfits managed in the "** Outfits **" folder either repeat step 7 above for a different outfit or:

   1. Right click the outfit folder you are wearing and select "Remove From Current Outfit"

   2. Right click the outfit folder you wish to wear and select "Add To Current Outfit"

9. To update all of the outfits in your "** Outfits **" folder with a new base head, body, shape, skin, or any shared item in the Base folder, simply replace that link with a link to the new item

If, as you add outfits in this manner, you discover that an item in the Base folder does not belong in one or more of your outfits then you will need to copy and paste that item into all outfits where it belongs and delete that item from the Base folder. The Base folder can only contain items that are shared by all outfits managed in this way.

You can create multiple Base folders, each for a different type of body, shape, skin, or look. For example, I have a Base folder for my regular sized avatar and another Base folder for my petite sized avatar. You can have a base folder for your Neko and another for your Goth. Or use a single smaller Base folder for all.

Why would I want to do this?

Maybe you don't want to do this. The system Outfits folder is the easiest way to manage outfits. When you create a new outfit with the Appearance icon it automatically populates a folder in the system Outfits folder with all items worn or attached for that outfit. However, many many system Outfits folders can induce lag and slow you down. In addition, it becomes difficult to locate outfits as you have to scroll through so many. And the duplication of so many items in every outfit folder in the system Outfits folder grows your inventory unnecessarily. It is also tedious to add or remove an item from all system Outfits.

Using a general Inventory folder to manage outfits allows you to create subfolders to further organize and make things easy to find. For example, I put all my bikini outfits in a subfolder named "Bikinis" under my "** Outfits **" folder.

It becomes easier to update all outfits with a simple change to the Base folder. If you want to add an item to all outfits in the system Outfits folder then you have to copy a link to that item into each outfit folder, potentially very tedious.

[ UPDATE 04/13/2026 ] A kind reader points out that moving outfits from the system Outfits folder to a general inventory folder means those outfits will not appear in the Outfit Gallery. This is true, the Outfit Gallery only displays outfits in the system Outfits folder. If the Outfit Gallery is a valuable feature that you wish to use then follow the above procedure but instead of using general inventory folders for your outfits, place them in the system Outfits folder. The Base folder(s) can go there as well. The method of using Replace with a Base folder then Add with an outfit folder works just as well inside the system Outfits folder. Note that you may encounter some limitations on the use of subfolders, e.g. a "Bikinis" folder, in the system Outfits folder. This is a trade-off you may need to consider, subfolders versus Outfit Gallery.

Outfit Folder Images

Outfit folders, whether in the system Outfits folder or in the general inventory, can contain an image to help remind you what that outfit looks like. It is easy to create these outfit images and quite helpful.

It is possible to create an image for an outfit folder in the general inventory. This presents the option of using the general inventory for outfit folders and unrestricted subfolders while adding an image to each outfit folder. It's not a Gallery, you do not see a display of all outfits with images as in the Outfit Gallery, but the saved image for each outfit folder displays when you mouse over that folder in your inventory. This is the method I use but it is a matter of personal preference.

Whichever way you choose to organize your outfit folders, setting an image for each outfit is very helpful. To set an image for an outfit folder, first wear that outfit (Replace with the Base folder and Add with the outfit folder). Position your avatar centered in the screen with all or part of the outfit you wish displayed in the image. Right click the outfit folder and select "Image". At the bottom of the Image window that pops up click on the "Use snapshot tool" camera icon and click "Save".

What should I do?

If you only have a few outfits then continue to use the system Outfits folder and ignore this Blog post.

In my case, I decided to use both the system Outfits folder and three Base folders with outfits for each. The outfits I wear most often I manage in the system Outfits folder but I try to keep that folder small enough to locate outfits easily. I moved all my other outfits to my Petite Base, my LaraX Base, or my Lara Base. In the Base outfits folders I created subfolders to organize further, placing all my bikini outfits in a subfolder, all my cyber outfits in a Cyber subfolder, all my skate outfits in a Skater subfolder, and so on.

I would say this method of using a Base folder with small outfit folders is not a replacement for the system Outfits folder but can be convenient when used in conjunction with the system Outfits folder. It offers some benefits such as easy update to all outfit folders, organization in subfolders, and reduction of inventory duplication. The main drawback of the Base folder method is it requires two steps to wear an outfit - Replace and Add, whereas the system Outfit folders only require one step - Replace.

Eredita Body Morphs / Deformers

The Eredita Morphs / Deformers, available on their Second Life Marketplace Shop, are incredibly well done.

This video illustrates the use of the Breast & Chest, Belly, and Hips Morphs. It begins with my LaraX body wearing all of these morphs. I detach them and reattach them to give you an idea of the dramatic improvement in appearance they provide. At one point in the video I only detach/reattach the stomach morph. I use these morphs in all my outfits. The modifications to your body by the Eredita morphs cannot be accomplished using the Shape editor sliders. They work with body physics and most mesh bodies.

I would suggest using the lower end of the values in the multitude of options available in these morphs. In this video I am wearing the Breast morph with Height -2 / Depth +2, the Chest morph with Depth -1, the Stomach morph with Height +1, Depth -2, and the Hips morph with Height 0, Depth -1.

If you decide to try these there are demo versions available at no cost. I would suggest starting with the Breast / Chest morph as that is the one that made the most significant improvement in my appearance.

Thanks Eredita! Your excellent work has contributed to enhanced beauty in Second Life.

Truth & Beauty Lab Answer Board

The latest creation from the Truth & Beauty Lab, the Answer Board, was released yesterday 18-March-2012. The Answer Board is a Pandorabot based rotating sign that provides answers to just about any question or topic one can think of. The board responds to local chat and provides its answers from, first, Wikipedia if it finds a matching article then Wolfram Alpha if no Wikipedia article is found then AI chat from pandorabots.com if no Wolfram Alpha answer is found.

The Answer Board is preconfigured and requires no setup other than rezzing, positioning, and resizing if desired. It uses a shared Wolfram Alpha Application ID which gives the board access to Wolfram Alpha but on a shared basis with a limit of 2000 queries per month. Therefore, it is recommended that the owner of an Answer Board register for their own Wolfram Alpha Application ID at http://products.wolframalpha.com/api/

Although ready to use out-of-the-box, the Answer Board can be extensively customized. A detailed Owners Manual is provided and available in PDF, Office, and OpenOffice formats. Non-owner users who touch the Answer Board receive a User Guide which is also available in PDF, Office, and OpenOffice formats.

The Answer Board can provide information on just about any topic due to the wealth of information available via the combined resources of Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha. Based on the recently released Pandorabot V7 technology, the Answer Board can automatically detect the user's language and query that language Wikipedia. Language detection is provided for Nihongo, Russkiy, Nederlands, Português, Polski, Italiano, Español, Français, Deutsch or English. It is the smartest scripted agent in Second Life.

In addition, the Answer Board can be enabled as a Greeter to detect and greet new arrivals, deliver notecards and landmarks, and emit a wide variety of particle displays. There is an extensive command set available to the owner and an easy to use dialog menu. The Answer Board is available for L$395 on the Second Life Marketplace at https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Truth-Beauty-Lab-Answer-Board/3304679

Here's what the Answer Board looks like:

New Truth & Beauty Lab Products 2/2012

The Truth & Beauty Lab (formerly Restless Studio) would like to inform you of some new products that may be useful, interesting, fun, entertaining, or otherwise of value.

Smart Rings and Smart Cuffs - http://bit.ly/y1hNrX

Stylishly textured in gold or silver, this line of single sculpted prim Smart Jewelry from the Truth & Beauty Lab can query Wikipedia, provide answers from Wolfram Alpha, emit a wide variety of particle displays, animate your avatar during particle displays, scan the area for objects and avatars, and target an object or avatar with a particle beam. One advantage of owning a Smart Ring or Smart Cuff is that, since the items are worn as attachments, you can travel anywhere on the grid and your Pandorabot featured ring or cuff is there to command.

Menhir Internationalized Pandorbots - http://bit.ly/ysFh7w

The Menhir Pandorabot is a single prim object shaped and textured as a Menhir ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menhir ). Menhir Pandorabots are scripted to include all the features of the Truth & Beauty Lab Pandorabots and the textured single sculpted prim provides a realistic recreation of a Menhir. Preconfigured Menhir language versions are available in English, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, Nederlands, Polski, and Português. The language configured Menhir will query the Wikipedia in that language, understanding that language chat and responding in that language when possible.

Smart Dance Pole & Smart Tip Jar Combo Pack - http://bit.ly/rMzxle

Automatically login an avatar and have it automatically start pole dancing, chatting, quoting Wikipedia, greeting new arrivals, delivering notecards and landmarks, monitoring and responding to group chat, and more. A super smart pole dance bot! The Truth & Beauty Lab Smart Dance Pole is scripted with the Pandorabot METAbolt Add-On and configured for use as a dance pole. It is an artificially intelligent dance pole and integrates with the Smart Tip Jar, accepting tips, triggering a pole dancing bot to undress, emote, change outfits, and interact with your visitors. Using an integrated Smart Dance Pole and Smart Tip Jar allows you to maintain an artificially intelligent pole dancing bot avatar who accepts tips 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round without monthly fees or hourly charges. The Smart Tip Jar can automatically trigger your dance pole bot avatar to undress when a tip threshold is reached and get dressed after a specified duration. NOTE: The Smart Tip Jar splits all tips - 90% going to the owner and 10% going to the Truth & Beauty Lab.

T3-M4 Scanning Follower Droid - http://bit.ly/zj69hQ

The Truth & Beauty Lab T3-M4 Scanning Follower will follow its owner at a configurable offset and can be controlled via a dialog menu interface. Included in its features is the ability to scan the area for objects and avatars then assemble and display a report which includes statistics on the resource consumption of the detected objects and avatars. The T3-M4 Scanning Follower can fire a laser at selected avatars or detected objects/avatars from one of its scans. It also makes cute bot sounds. The boxed product includes preconfigured Scanning Followers - two T3-M4 Astromech Droids. The droids are a realistic reconstruction of the T3-M4 from the Old Republic Star Wars era. The T3-M4 Scanning Follower integrates with the Truth & Beauty Lab Pandorabots so versions of it that chat, query Wikipedia, supply answers from Wolfram Alpha, greet arrivals, etc are also available in the marketplace store. A single prim Eye Candy Scanning Follower is also available for those who prefer to conserve resources and display cool visuals while providing identical functionality as the 39 prim T3-M4 Scanning Follower.

Particle Textures Display Heart - http://bit.ly/y0Fyaa

This single prim sculpted heart rotates, emits particle displays using the particle textures in its contents, and accepts new particle textures allowing you to view your particle displays easily and quickly. The prim cycles through whatever particle textures are in its contents. Clicking the heart prim steps to the next particle texture.

Truth & Beauty Lab Heart Follower - http://bit.ly/y4rPKK

This single prim sculpted heart rotates, follows its owner at a specified offset, changes textures, emits particle displays, and can be used to scan the area for objects and avatars producing a complete detailed report.

Second Life Haiku Generator - http://bit.ly/AjiqZ9

Rez this portrait of Basho, the famous Japanese haiku poet, and click it to get an automatically generated Second Life related haiku. Each time the portrait is clicked a different Second Life related haiku will be generated. The large collection of words and phrases used to construct the haikus is constantly growing and the haikus are generated on a server so you never have to update the inworld object.

Rebranding as Truth & Beauty Lab

I am rebranding the Restless Reviews blog, Restless Studio (my inworld development and demonstration area), and my Second Life Marketplace store as "Truth & Beauty Lab".

I'll be focusing more on product reviews here and highlighting some of my newly released products. The Second Life Pandorabots blog will still be the primary area for info, news, and how-to's on Second Life Pandorabots.

Why I Don't Wear Mesh -- Yet

The recent release of the Phoenix Viewer version 1.6.0.1591 with mesh support finally convinced me to try mesh. Prior to this release many, if not most, viewers used inworld could not render mesh properly so why wear it ? You would just look all garbled and partly naked to those viewers without mesh support. But now most viewers would render mesh properly so I thought I would give it a whirl.

I found a nice looking semi-sheer cropped lace tank top from Beetlebones @ Existence. I like the way mesh drapes nicely:
Unfortunately, body parts can still poke through mesh clothing items producing the familiar wtf look:
Mesh clothing cannot be resized like normal clothing or sculpted prim clothing. So, mesh clothing vendors provide several sizes to select from. This item comes in 5 sizes - XS, S, M, L, XL. I tried the XS since my shape is smallish but it was too small and my torso poked through in several places. Medium size was way too big so here I am wearing the Small. It fits fairly well but notice how the front of the top hangs a few inches out in front of my chest:
Normally I would simply move the top back a bit by selecting it and editing the position. You cannot even position a mesh clothing item! So, no mesh for me. Yet. It is possible that with improvements to mesh like the mesh parametric deformer project that mesh will someday be a significant improvement to Second Life. Maybe even as-is there are some mesh creators who design clothing for avatar shapes that do not have huge boobs. Till then, thanks but no thanks.

Second Life Premium Membership plus I Rant at Cynical SL Bloggers

Gawd, I am so sick of reading all the negative blog posts on everything Linden Lab does. First off, I have no affiliation with Linden Lab and they don't even read what I write. I just think it is horribly misleading for established SL residents and respected bloggers to criticize every single action LL takes. They could offer free money (as they sorta do with money trees and the recent Linden Realms game) and these bloggers would call it unfair that hard working residents like themselves were being undercut by "the Boys" giving away money. In fact, the currently running 50% discount on Premium membership is very much "free money". Check this out.

Linden Lab is currently offering a quarterly Premium membership plan that includes a 50% discount on the first quarter. Signup for one quarter of Premium membership at $11.25. Assuming a $L250 per $1 US exchange rate, your one quarter of Premium membership costs approximately $L2812. Premium benefits include a $L1000 signup bonus for first time members and a $L300 per week stipend. Let's do some simple arithmetic.

One quarter is 52/4 = 13 weeks
13 weeks x $L300 per week = $L3900 quarterly stipend
$L1000 signup bonus + $L3900 stipend = $L4900 you receive
$L4900 - $L2812 cost of 1st quarter = $L2088 profit

Linden Lab is paying you approximately $8.35 US to try Premium membership for a quarter!

So, Linden Lab is giving away money and old bitter cynical Second Life bloggers are complaining. Not only do they complain about this 50% discount, they complain about the free gifts you get as a Premium member. Hahaha! Free gifts! So, I thought, these gifts must be awful if people are complaining about something that is free. I went to a kiosk and got my gifts and look! The couch is way cool:

Premium membership gets you a lot of other benefits too. I recommend the annual membership as it is cheaper in the long run. The quarterly membership 50% discount only applies to the 1st quarter so a year on that plan would cost $78.75 while the annual membership plan costs $72. Either way, it is a great deal with excellent benefits and you are supporting the continued existence and improvement of Second Life.

In short, Second Life Premium membership is a no brainer. Everybody should upgrade!

Boho Baku Fiesta Tie Dye Skirt

I discovered a cool hippie/gypsy clothing shop in Second Life called Boho Baku. Their Boho skirts come in a wide variety of colors and fit comfortably. They also sell tops and jewelry. Here I am wearing the Boho Fiesta Tye Dye Skirt and Belt. I matched a top from L&G - the Valentina Rose, for a simple beautiful comfortable colorful look. I'm ready for the Country Fair in Second Life's Eugene, Oregon!

LeLutka Shorts and BOOM Sport Tee - Cute and Comfy!

Sintimacy Rocking Lowrise Latex Outfit

I recently purchased a discounted item from Sintimacy - the Rocking Lowrise Latex Outfit in black (only L$99). It's also available at the same price in red. As seems to be normal for the aptly named Sintimacy, the outfit is scorching hawt! Fairly easy to select a subset of items for my outfit, my only complaint was the No Copy boots which needed fitting. Why do designers distribute items that need modification with No Copy permission ? See my rant on this topic.

However, the boots resized and repositioned easily and the dialog menu provided a "delete scripts" button so everything went smoothly. Here's my modelling session in the Rocking Lowrise Latex Outfit:

*BOOM* Halter, Boyshorts and Deck Shoes

Recently I discovered yet another clothing store I love :) *BOOM* is a large shop with an excellent selection of quality items. Here I am modeling the Hibiscus-Green Infinity Halter and Boyshorts with their deck shoes. Cute! The deck shoes are a pain to configure - it's nice they are so detailed with 4 different color areas but each shoe must be configured separately, there are no presets, no way to store presets, and no menu option for deleting the scripts after configuring a pair. I like them anyway!

Email2IM - Practical Kinetic Art

One of the scripted objects I created and sell is Email2IM. This single prim object allows me to respond to IM's via Email when I am not logged in to Second Life. I find it quite useful and a great aid in allowing me to assist my customers. I use it almost daily.

Email2IM requires that the single prim object be rezzed somewhere with scripts enabled. I decided to make it something I would want to have in my home in Second Life so I added some texturing and a variety of geometrical deformations to the script. The Email2IM prim became a kinetic art object that is pleasing to watch and changes continually. Voila, art meets practical!

Here is a video of the Email2IM prim hovering over my house:

The Email2IM Owner Manual is available in PDF format on Scribd. From the manual's introduction:
The Email2IM object enables the owner to email a message to a Second Life resident. The object acts parses incoming email and relays the body of the message as anInstant Message to the Second Life resident whose name appears in the Subject lineof the email. Owners of the Email2IM system are thus able to respond to forwardedIM's even when not online by simply sending email to the object's address with thename of the resident as the subject line.In addition, the Email2IM object changes shape and texture, acting as an art object soas to be pleasing to the eye while in use.

Email2IM is available on the Second Life Marketplace for L$195

Automatic Facial Animation HUD

I purchased a nice little automatic facial animation HUD made by Outy Banjo. Called "Auto Emote", the HUD consumes a modest amount of screen real estate and provides a fairly extensive set of facial animation and programmable trigger phrases. When not in active use the HUD can be minimized to consume even less screen.

The HUD includes over 300 trigger phrases and operates in 3 modes - automatic, click only, and loop mode allowing you to hold animations indefinitely and combine animations.

From the description on Outy's Second Life Marketplace:
With this HUD, you can mix facial expressions like paint. Great for models who need to hold a pose indefinately, in-world performers who want their mouth to perform dynamic movements during a performance, those who want a timed auto-smile, or even those who just want to make silly or ugly faces(Combining animations can make for some pretty crazy faces).
Auto Emote v2.0 supports 950 phrases, and you can edit them to your liking. The Auto Emote Trigger Phrases notecard contains groups of 50 triggers per facial animation.
Here's a  video I made of me using the Auto Emote HUD:

Available on the Second Life Marketplace for L$500

Phoenix Rising Risk Vest and Pocket Watch

Phoenix Rising must be going out of business or their minds since everything in the store is L$25 with discount items at L$1. I picked up a few more colors of my favorite vest and pocket watch as well as several nice tops and a gown. Super great sale - I have no idea how long it's going to last.

Here I am modelling the Phoenix Rising Risk vest and pocket watch. The pants are included in the package (now only L$25 !!). I'm also wearing a white dress shirt from Connors, Dragoness shoes from Kalnins, nails & rings from Mandala.
